Major League Baseball’s 2024 postseason is underway, with the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals moving into the playoff bracket. The Tigers knocked out the Houston Astros on Wednesday, while the Royals swept the Baltimore Orioles, with the two AL Central underdogs sweeping the best-of-three series in two games on the road. The Tigers advance to the ALDS against their AL Central rival, the Cleveland Guardians. The Royals will next face Aaron Judge, Juan Soto and the New York Yankees.
The Astros saw their streak of seven consecutive ALCS appearances come to an end, while the Orioles are 0-5 in the playoffs over the past two seasons.
The other two teams will try to join the divisional round on Wednesday as their opponents try to stay alive. The New York Mets and San Diego Padres both won Game 1s on Tuesday, so the Milwaukee Brewers and Atlanta Braves face elimination on Wednesday in the National League.
Four teams — the top two in each league — received first-round byes. The New York Yankees, Cleveland Guardians, Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies have advanced to the Division Series.
The Mets and Braves clinched the final two postseason spots on Monday, leaving the Arizona Diamondbacks on the outside of the playoff picture. The Mets won Game 1 of a crucial doubleheader in Atlanta to clinch their spot. The Braves regrouped and won Game 2 to become the 12th and final playoff team.
The Braves, Mets and T-backs all finished with 89-73 records. The Braves will secure a tiebreaker against both teams and be the No. 5 seed in the bracket. The Mets are in 6th place with a tiebreaker win over Arizona.
All wild card series will be played by higher seeds and will conclude on Thursday, October 3. The LDS round begins on Saturday, October 5. The league championship series begins on Sunday, October 13. And the World Series starts on Tuesday, October 22 or Friday, October 25. (Click here for the full game schedule.)
