More than a dozen people were taken to area hospitals after a tram crashed into Universal Studios Hollywood Saturday night.

More than a dozen people died with minor injuries Saturday night after a tram crashed into Universal Studios Hollywood in California, officials said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office said the tram's driver suffered mechanical failure and several passengers fell from the tram around 9 p.m. PT when a car hit the tracks.

Fifteen people were taken to local hospitals with injuries, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“A tram accident occurred at the theme park tonight, resulting in multiple minor injuries, as confirmed by the LA County Fire Department,” a Universal Studios Hollywood spokesperson told CNN in a statement. “We are working to support our guests and understand the circumstances that led to the accident.”

The theme park did not provide further details on what caused the problem with the tram.

Universal Studios Hollywood operates trams for its popular Studio Tour, which takes visitors to various filming locations on the backlot and 3-D experiences.
