Goff, ranked No. 2 in the world, is making his first Olympic appearance. He had planned to compete in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 before he tested positive for Covid, forcing him to withdraw.
“Never in a million years did I think I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA,” Goff said in a statement. “I couldn’t be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we demonstrate our commitment and passion on the biggest stage in a moment that unites athletes and fans around the world.”
Goff, like James, received the honor by a vote of the U.S. Olympians in a process overseen by the Team USA Athletic Commission. Fellow American tennis player Chris Eubanks recommended Goff.
“I’m incredibly proud of Coco — I know how great she is as a tennis player, but more importantly, how great she is as a person,” Eubanks said. “I don’t think anyone deserves this honor.”
Goff has won seven singles titles, most notably the 2023 US Open, along with nine doubles titles, including this year’s French Open. Goff began her climb to the top of tennis in 2019 when she reached the fourth round of Wimbledon as a 15-year-old.
“To be nominated by your teammates for this honor speaks volumes about the way Coco approaches her sport and her role as a member of Team USA,” said Sara Hirschland, CEO of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee. “I’m excited for him to begin his Olympic journey here in Paris, alongside LeBron, leading Team USA and cheering on the fans. [the] America and the World.”
