PARIS – Tennis star Coco Koff will join LeBron James as the US Olympic team’s flag bearer at the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics on Friday, making him the youngest American in US Olympic history to carry the flag at age 20.

Goff would be a different age than James, 39, who was in the middle of his rookie NBA season when Goff was born in 2004. They will lead their American teammates in first-of-its-kind opening ceremonies, parading boats down Paris’ iconic Chain. the river

Goff, ranked No. 2 in the world, is making his first Olympic appearance. He had planned to compete in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 before he tested positive for Covid, forcing him to withdraw.

“Never in a million years did I think I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA,” Goff said in a statement. “I couldn’t be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we demonstrate our commitment and passion on the biggest stage in a moment that unites athletes and fans around the world.”

Goff, like James, received the honor by a vote of the U.S. Olympians in a process overseen by the Team USA Athletic Commission. Fellow American tennis player Chris Eubanks recommended Goff.

“I’m incredibly proud of Coco — I know how great she is as a tennis player, but more importantly, how great she is as a person,” Eubanks said. “I don’t think anyone deserves this honor.”

Goff has won seven singles titles, most notably the 2023 US Open, along with nine doubles titles, including this year’s French Open. Goff began her climb to the top of tennis in 2019 when she reached the fourth round of Wimbledon as a 15-year-old.
