Oklahoma City Thunder guard Josh Giddey will not face charges following a Newport Beach (Calif.) Police Department investigation into allegations that Giddey had an inappropriate relationship with a minor, a PD official said. Athletic.
Officials with the Newport Beach Police Department said they could not confirm the allegations. A league source said the NBA has not completed its review of the allegations against Giddey.
In November, when the NBA said it was considering the allegations, Giddey declined to comment on the matter.
“I understand the question, obviously,” Kiddy, 21, said. “No further comment at this time.”
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver told ESPN in December that the league was holding off on any punishment for Giddey pending the results of the investigation as they waited for the Newport Beach PD to complete their investigation.
“Where there is a criminal investigation, we take a back seat,” he said. “So you have an indictment, you have a criminal investigation. It affects how the players and the players association can work with us because of course the player has to protect his rights. I'm never going to say never, but this is the path we've continued to follow … where things stand now.
Giede, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, is averaging 11.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 39 games for Oklahoma City this season.
TMZ first reported that the police investigation had concluded.
