AUGUSTA, GA. – A day after setting a tournament record at the Masters, Tiger Woods posted his own lowest.
Clearly hampered following a 23-hole day Friday at Augusta National, Woods sank to a career-worst 82 Saturday to slide down the leaderboard.
This round was his worst score by a pro in a major. Before Saturday, his previous high round at the Masters was a 78, hitting consecutive rounds in 2022.
“I didn't hit it well or putt well,” Woods said in a short scrum with reporters. “I didn't have a good warm-up session and I continued that all day today. Hit the ball everywhere I know I shouldn't hit it.
It was Woods' third shot at a major in the '80s and the first since the 2015 US Open, when he dealt with his first wave of back problems. His highest score at a major was when he shot an 85 in the second round as an amateur at the 1995 US Open.
Woods' lower back limited him again on Saturday, as he struggled with his swing and hit five fairways and eight greens. Asked if there was a specific swing or moment that triggered the problem, he said: “All day.”
He went out in 42, then made five more bogeys to come home. He finished the third round at 11-over 227 and is now tied for 52nd.
With a windy second-round 72, Woods He scored 24 runs in the MastersTh Time in a row, breaking out of a tie with Fred Jody and Gary Blair. That's a tall order for a 48-year-old who was already in constant discomfort.
“Oh, yeah,” he said when asked about him on Friday. “It did.”
Saturday marked Woods' fourth full tournament round of the year, following a midway exit in his second round at the Genesis Invitational in February. He hasn't completed four rounds in an official tournament in 14 months, but Woods vowed to return on Sunday.
“My team will prepare me,” he said. “It's going to be a long night and a long warm-up session, but we'll be ready.”
