PHILADELPHIA — Although they were never challenged, the Braves enjoyed a sixth straight National League East crown. They popped the champagne and started aiming for a long postseason run after Wednesday night’s 4-1 victory over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

“They’re all special, they’re all very tough,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “You’ve got to enjoy every time you get a chance to do it. It’s like I told them, ‘Don’t forget how it feels,’ because it tells you that your hard work is worth something.” A good feeling.

  • Remaining games (16): MIA (3), vs PHI (3), WSH (4), vs CHC (3), vs WSH (3)
  • Levels Update: The Braves are currently atop the NL division, meaning Oct. They earned a first-round bye in a five-game NL division series that begins on the 7th and the No. 4 and No. 5 will face the winner of the wild card teams.

Austin Riley hit a two-run homer in the first and was sacrificed in the third inning in favor of Spencer Strider, who limited the damage during a 36-pitch first and allowed just one run in seven innings. With Kirby Yates recording the final out of the night, the Braves began celebrating their latest division title at the stadium that abruptly ended their 2022 season.

“It’s good no matter how we do it,” Ronald Acuna Jr. said. “It just didn’t work.”

The Braves extended their MLB-best division title streak to 23 total. This coincides with their second initial win date. The 1995 club also sealed the NL East on September 13, and the 2002 team won on September 9.

But winning the division is the first goal for the Braves, who could face the Phillies in the NL Division Series for the second year in a row. Regardless of whether this rematch works out, they aim to reintroduce themselves to the joy they felt when they won the World Series in 2021.

“There’s something special about this group,” Riley said. “We trust each other. We work hard everyday. Coming to the park every day is so much fun.

Thanks to MVP-caliber seasons from Acuna and Matt Olsen, the Braves have MLB’s best record in the second half of the season. Four wins away from a second straight 100-win season, it’s notable that they’ve spent at least three months without their top starters, Max Fried and Kyle Wright. They spent the first month of the season without reliever Rhysal Iglesias.

But courtesy of Bryce Elder’s breakout, the rotation was strong and benefited from one of the most potent lineups baseball has ever seen. The Braves were in first place at the end of each game, minus April 2, sitting a half-game behind the Mets, who played an extra game during that time. But they didn’t really get rolling until June 3, when they went on a seven-game hitting streak that included a sweep of the Mets.

“This team is unbelievable,” said Fried, who missed three months with an inflamed left forearm. “We’ve had some injuries throughout the year, but this group is special. Everyone’s been able to pick each other up when we’ve needed it. It’s been fun to enjoy the success of our season and know it’s not over yet. It’s just getting started.”

The Braves are 63-26 through June 3. They blew a four-game lead in May, a seven-game lead in June, an 11-game lead in July and a 14-game lead in August. They finished the race with a 17-game lead over the Phillies.

“We come into spring training and the first thing we say is we want to win [NL] East,” Strider said. “When you verbalize something and make it your goal, if you’re so committed to it, it affects your preparation and your focus. It really narrows you down and allows you to really overcome any kind of adversity.

Strider has posted a 1.56 ERA in 40 1/3 innings (seven appearances) against the Phillies. But it was hard to forget his third-inning struggles to start Game 3 of last year’s NLDS, despite sitting out most of the previous three weeks because of an oblique strain.

Strider’s 74-pitch tally after his rough first inning in Wednesday’s win was a reminder of how quickly the Braves have distanced themselves from potential trouble this year. Strider and Elder became All-Stars in Fried and Wright’s absence. As for Charlie Morton, he proved he still has magic in his 39-year-old arm.

But what makes this the best team in Braves history is the incredible offense, which has hit an NL record 282 home runs and is on pace for 312 runs, five more than the AL/NL record. Joins Riley (35), Olson (51), and Acuna (37) as team members to hit 35-plus homers. Marcell Ozuna’s incredible comeback season has made him a homer away from this club. Ozzie Albies was a homer, making the Braves the second team to have five players hit 30-plus homers in a season, along with the 2019 Twins.

So, it’s not just about MVP candidates. But as Acuna approaches a 40-homer, 40-steal season — and perhaps a previously unanticipated 40-70 season — as Olson bids to set both the homer and RBI records, they add to the wonder of the season. It will be celebrated a few more times this year.

“Every division title feels different, but every year the next one feels better,” AJ Minter said. “We expect to be here every year, putting on an Atlanta Braves jersey. That is what makes this team and organization special.”
